COMMON QUERIES
DO I NEED A REFERRAL?
If you wish to access a Medicare rebate for counselling and/or coaching, you should get a referral from your GP, along with a Mental Health Care Plan. If you are under the care of a Psychiatrist or Paediatrician, they can refer via a letter. Medicare will not provide a rebate on psycho-educational assessments.
If you do not want to access the medicare rebate, I can bill you as a private client and you can access your private health fund if applicable.
HOW MANY SESSIONS CAN I ACCESS UNDER MEDICARE?
Your doctor will initially refer you for 6 medicare-rebated sessions. When those sessions have been completed, your doctor can refer you further sessions (up to a maximum of 10 in total per calendar year). After these sessions have been used, if you require further, ongoing therapy/support, you are welcome to continue as a private client.
CAN I OBTAIN A PRIVATE HEALTH REBATE?
Private Health Providers may provide a rebate depending on your level of cover, however you cannot claim both a Medicare and Private Health rebate. The Medicare rebate is generally higher.
HOW LONG IS A COUNSELLING/THERAPY SESSION?
Counselling/therapy sessions are generally 50 minutes.
